Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of the ERIKA oil spill on the population dynamics of the Common Guillemot Uria aalge on Skomer Island, Wales. The sinking of the ERIKA oil tanker in December 1999 has caused a major pollution incident in the Bay Of Biscay, resulting in the death of more seabirds than in any previous spill in Europe. Our specific objects are: 1. To assess the impact on the total guillemot population on Skomer Island. 2. To determine the survival rates of marked adult and immature guillemots 3. To determine the sublethal effects of oiling and the consequences of pair-bonding for reproductive sucess in guillemots. 4.To model the long-term consequences of a major oil-spill for a populaion of guillemots.
