- Abstract:
- NCAS' Moveable Scanning Ka-band Cloud Radar is a portable radar that principally measures clouds, precipitation and winds. Since its acquisition in 2015, the radar has become a critical and well-used instrument - the focal point of many atmospheric research campaigns in the UK and abroad. This radar underpins world-leading research that spans hydrometeorology, weather forecasting, aeroecology (the study of airborne animals such as pollinating insects) and validation of satellite remote sensors. It also provides publicly available near-real-time images of clouds and precipitation. The radar is nearing the end of its operational life and NCAS wish to invest in a replacement for this asset as there is a significant community need for such a tool. This will ensure there is no gap in our national capability. The new cloud radar will notably have more energy-efficient components with upgraded operational status monitoring technologies. The radar sensor will also be packaged within a novel form factor that makes it easily deployable anywhere in the world. This will improve logistics, allow for more autonomous operations and maintenance, and reduce long-term costs.
