- Abstract:
- We will investigate past atmospheric dioxide levels in the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene periods by applying two geochemical proxies to the sediment samples from Tanzania. The proxies are the boron isotope ratio of surface dwelling planktonic foraminifer shells and the carbon isotope ratio of specific biomarkers. We will drill four cores to the south Tanzania coastal plain, which is well known for its excellently preserved microfossils and from which the presence of original marine biomarkers has been confirmed. We will test the hypothesis that CO2 decline contributed to global cooling over the past 80 m.yr. and examine the role of CO2 across specific intervals of rapid climate change, including the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum event, and the early Oligocene initiation of widespread glaciation on Antarctica.
