Abstract:
Heriot-Watt will decide on the prioritisation and use of the NERC Cross-disciplinary research for Discovery Science grant through its existing Impact Acceleration Account Steering Group. The group oversees Heriot-Watt University's EPSRC IAA. As such, the group has tried and tested processes for allocating, monitoring and reporting on funding that supports working across disciplinary boundaries. The IAA Steering Group is comprised of members of HWU senior management team, including the Deputy Principal (Research and Innovation), Deputy Principal (Enterprise and Business), Chief Entrepreneurial Officer, Global Director of Research Engagement, Head of PSI Division (Policy, Strategy & Impact) and Head of the School Engineering. The Steering Group membership will be expanded to include Heriot-Watt University's Chief Scientist. The Deputy Principal (Research and Innovation) takes an institutional-wide role, encompassing all of the disciplines. The NERC Cross-disciplinary research for Discovery Science grant will be managed as a stream of activity with the IAA Steering Group. This will ensure synergies are realised between the existing EPSRC IAA award and the Cross-disciplinary research award. In line with existing arrangements for the EPSRC IAA, the Impact Project Manager will manage the day-to-day running of the project and report progress to the IAA Steering Group. Standard HWU project reporting and finance tools will be used to monitor the NERC CDR account, with regular meetings between the Impact Project Manager, and the Research Grants Finance office held to ensure accurate financial and project reporting. Day-to-day operational decisions will be made by the IAA Project Manager but the Steering Group will make strategic decisions. The Research Engagement Directorate will provide support via Legal and Contract Services and from the Research Development Team. Other components of RED will provide general administrative and technical support for the Steering Group and the Impact Project manager. The Enterprise Team will be actively engaged in supporting innovation activities to maximise their impact. For the NERC Cross-disciplinary research for Discovery Science grant, specific opportunities have been identified as part of scoping exercise, these opportunities will be further developed and funding administered after a competitive processes.
