Abstract:
The majority of the award (#100,000) will be accessible to any lecturer and post doctoral researcher within the institution. An open call will be announced with the expectation of financially supporting two to four research projects and several standalone thematic events. The rest of the funds will be used to pay for a coach to support applicants, prioritising those new to grant writing, new to interdisciplinary collaboration and those recently transitioned into academia. Ideally this opportunity will be advertised across the University the week commencing the 24 October with a closing date of 2 December. A panel decision will be made within fourteen days so that projects can start before the 16 December. The awarding panel will be based upon our existing Research Strategy group that is Chaired by the Vice-President for Research, who directed a cross-institutional crossdisciplinary institute for environmental sustainability for 10 years. Members include the five Faculty Directors for Research and Innovation (FDRI) who will not only provide their own disciplinary perspective but also experience on what has worked within their own faculties to encourage collaboration. In addition, for this scheme FDRIs will be joined by a representative from one of our four cross-faculty interdisciplinary flagship institutes, an Early Career Researcher and an interdisciplinary research support professional. These additional members will provide specific expertise relevant to the objectives of this scheme. Applications will be assessed on i) how well individuals plan to engage with different fields of research and methodologies developed by other disciplines; ii) to what extent proposed activity will unlock new knowledge and research approaches within the environmental sciences; and iii) how the team will address the UKRI ED&I principles. The research growth team within Research Services will coordinate activity across Finance and the recipients of funding and will pull together outputs for the final report. In addition a voluntary reflection meeting will be organised to share any good practice or suggestions for how to manage future discipline hopping schemes. A combination of outputs will then be made available to colleagues within Sheffield and at other institutions through meetings, crossinstitutional peer groups and web based materials.
