Abstract:
This award has supported 11 cross-disciplinary projects at the University of Cambridge spanning 13 departments and 4 Schools (Biological, Physical and Social Sciences and Clinical Medicine). A diverse cross-disciplinary Steering Committee reviewed applications and based their assessment on potential for interdisciplinarity and impact for Discovery Science, while also considering the diversity of candidates, activities and career stages. 4 of the 11 projects were led by early career researchers and 4 were led by researchers from protected categories. Activities ranged from workshops with internal and external partners, purchase of crucial equipment, collaborative activities using new or high-risk methods and training in adjacent fields. The outcomes and outputs generated by the 11 awards have included training handbooks, white papers, new grant submissions, collaborative projects, popular-level publications and press releases. Interdisciplinary links have been established across a wide range of University departments and with a diverse array of over 20 external partners. The funding has catalysed ongoing collaborations that will seek to expand the preliminary findings of these awards. In most cases, teams have either submitted or are preparing grants that promise to open new, interdisciplinary collaborations and deliver further, impactful Discovery Science. In a number of cases, teams are looking to broaden the global impact of their research through collaboration with low- and middle-income countries and settings.
