Abstract:
Cross-disciplinary Research Capability for Discovery Science at Oxford is designed to enable projects, placements/secondments and network to be developed with a view to enabling new cross-disciplinary collaborations to form and develop new perspectives and methodologies. Building on lessons learned from the Discipline Hopping award (2022-23), we will use multiple methods to advance Oxford's cross-disciplinary capability across the breadth of discovery sciences. Enabling particularly early career researchers (ECRs) to lead a collaborative project is invaluable in their development. ECRs are not usually deemed eligible to lead collaborative, multi-disciplinary research projects, so having this opportunity in safe space is a vital development tool. Providing space and small amounts of funding to deliver workshops presenting multiple disciplinary perspectives around an identified challenge/theme, provides fertile space for new collaborations to be identified and grow across all career stages and can bring about surprising new directions for research. Placements in other research/laboratory space, and secondments into other institutions/sectors enrich and accelerate the learning around alternative perspectives and research questions, that may never have occurred otherwise and enable research uptake into policy and practice. And not simply in the project in question, but through gaining the alternative perspective, further research areas and opportunities open up for future projects and collaborations embedding the collaborative, cross-disciplinary capability in the longer term. Cross-Disciplinary Research Capability for Discovery Science at Oxford aims to increase capacity in this vital area for future research to benefit, and coupled with the learning from the Agile Initiative (Changing the Environment Program), will equip a critical mass of researchers to ensure high-risk high-reward projects in Discovery Science push the boundaries of knowledge.
