Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted scientific training. While many courses have successfully pivoted to online delivery, other types of training, such as wet lab training, have proven difficult or impossible to deliver. Moreover, online training often lacks the opportunity to network with others and develop cohorts of researchers with shared interests that can support each other. This proposal looks to deliver short and intensive 'summer school' training in ecological genomics, going from sample to sequence to analysis, to fill this critical gap. Our proposal supports the large NERC community based in and around Edinburgh, and will be delivered by staff at the leading genomics and bioinformatics facility at Edinburgh Genomics. We will deliver our summer school training to two cohorts of 12 students, with each student trained in sampling, DNA extraction, short-read sequencing library preparation, data QC, SNP calling and basic genomic analyses.
