Abstract:
The Centre for doctoral training in sustainable management of UK marine resources (SuMMeR CDT) will provide PhD training contributing towards building the next generation of innovative transdisciplinary researchers, solution providers and practitioners needed to support government and non-government sectors. The researchers will graduate with an understanding that the UK's coasts and seas are key to economic development, food and energy security, and the physical health and mental wellbeing of those who live on or visit coastal areas. Through their research, they will address 21st century challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, socio-economic deprivation, increased use of marine space, and the needs for environmental improvement for mitigation, adaptation and conservation. SuMMeR CDT will provide training for at least 48 doctoral students at the interface between life and environmental sciences and many other key disciplines including economics, social sciences, public health, governance, legislation, psychology, engineering and energy. Our core partnership comprises the Universities of Plymouth, Bangor, Exeter and Heriot Watt, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the Marine Biological Association, which bring together a vast and multidisciplinary expertise in marine research and postgraduate training from England, Scotland and Wales. This is bolstered by specialist input from the Universities of Portsmouth and West of England, as well as the Zoological Society of London and UKCEH. SuMMeR has strong commitments from 45 Associate Partners that will enable us to train our students in engaged partnerships with government, industry and business across the UK, and to offer all students practical placements and secondments. We will build the training on our research strengths across different marine sectors including renewable energy, aquaculture, fisheries, tourism, public health, leisure and recreation; and across different specialisations, e.g. natural capital and ecosystem services, ecosystem restoration and modelling, climate change, circular economy, remote sensing, marine spatial planning, oceans and human health, engineering and robotics. During their PhD programme, students will work on a challenging research project aligned with research priorities identified and supported through continuous engaged codesign with stakeholders. Our CDT will develop bespoke training that builds on and utilises a large and relevant range of existing postgraduate training courses across the partnership to provide depth and breadth. Foundation courses across the disciplines and sectors, and specialist courses and workshops will provide underpinning training. Challenge events involving stakeholder partners will be central to Annual Summer Schools. Cohort development is supported through all these activities and regular monthly and annual meetings, webinar series and conferences. Our pro-active approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion will promote and enable wide participation and engage a diverse base of talented graduate students in postgraduate research. We will align closely with the NERC-ESRC Sustainable Management of Marine Resources programme and its aims and objectives. As a measure of the Consortium's commitment to the establishment of the CDT, the research organisations involved have committed to an additional 24 PhD scholarships and provide substantial academic time to lead and manage the Centre; this co-funding contributes support for a Centre manager and administrators to enable the day-to-day running of the Centre. Our associated partners have agreed to support at least 40 CASE awards as well as training and placements. This additional resource emphasises the Consortium's strategic investment in transdisciplinary, engaged marine science and our ambition to maintain the UK as a World Leader in training provision, research and practice in marine management into the future.
