- Abstract:
- Working with our partners, we will provide a world-class, multi- and interdisciplinary training environment for the next generation of researchers across the breadth of NERC's remit and at the frontiers of the environmental sciences. We shall recruit and train a diverse cohort of talented students, and support them to work creatively with end-users to advance knowledge and find new solutions to leading environmental challenges. Partnerships and collaborations will underpin the excellence of our programme. Our vision builds on our experience in DTP1 in delivering a tailored programme of cohortbased training to support and develop research students of excellent potential. DTP in Environmental Research students will be given the freedom and responsibility to lead their research in imaginative directions, supported to develop and implement novel innovations, and given diverse opportunities to develop as leaders in their chosen careers. Students will be selected on the basis of their academic excellence and their ability to develop an independent research career in academia, industry and/or government. In DTP2 our programme will now be available for students to complete on a part-time, flexible basis. DTP students will join one (or more) of our nine host Departments: Physics, Zoology, Earth Sciences, Plant Sciences, Research Laboratory in Archaeology and the History of Art, School of Geography & the Environment, and - new for DTP2 - Engineering Sciences, Chemistry and the Mathematics Institute. All students will engage with leading-edge research problems. For DTP2 we will create new opportunities for students to conduct research with clear, real-world impacts through co-creation of projects with CASE and collaborative partners. We will recruit excellent students to one of three types of studentship: open-ended, challenge-led, and CASE. The latter two will be advertised as defined projects with named collaborator and CASE partners. These projects will solve open problems identified by end-users and address global challenges including those outlined in the Industrial Strategy, such as climate change resilience and clean energy sources, natural hazard assessment and risk management, natural capital and ecosystem resilience, Earth observation and space exploration. Open-ended studentships, where students identify and develop their own research project ideas with supervisors and partners, will be offered across our three research streams: Biodiversity, Ecology & Evolutionary Processes (BEEP); Physical Climate System (PCS); and Dynamic Earth, Surface Processes and Natural Hazards (DESPNH). Our unique research and training environment will ensure that all students begin their doctoral programme with i) a broad understanding of the social, economic and scientific needs for environmental research; ii) new and proven technologies for investigating the natural world; and iii) the quantitative and computing skills needed to tackle novel challenges in environmental research. All DTP students will undertake our hands-on, cross-disciplinary training in quantitative and computing skills, and research methods; topical training on the Earth System; and professional skills training in enterprise and innovation, project development and management, and science communication. At the end of their core training, students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to complete a short, well-defined research project that solves a bite-sized research challenge set by end-users. Their career development will be further supported through placements and work experience opportunities during their four-year programme.
