- Abstract:
- Environmental science is key to addressing the global challenges facing society today. We must balance the use of natural resources to support economic growth with protecting our environment to ensure its sustainability. Finding solutions to this challenge requires a stepwise change in the way we conduct research. Today's scientists need to work across disciplinary boundaries, pooling expertise from diverse research backgrounds in conjunction with industry, government and stakeholder organisations. Addressing these challenges requires people with diverse skills working in collaboration with industry, government and stakeholders. The vision of the E4 DTP is to provide a world class research and training centre that attracts the most talented students to conduct frontier research in environmental science. Our diverse range of partner organisations from research, industry, NGO, and policy sectors will equip our students with key skills to operate within multidisciplinary research environments and foster networks as future leaders in science, industry and government. These skills will empower our graduates to generate innovative solutions to environmental challenges. The four mains strengths of our DTP are: 1) An outstanding research community with a critical mass of world-leading researchers and research facilities to support and inspire students to reach their potential. 2) Flexible and advanced training in key skills needed for a range of sectors offered by both our academic and nonacademic partners, within a clear governance structure. 3) A multidisciplinary approach that enables students to tackle complex environmental questions in collaboration with researchers from across the NERC remit and beyond. 4) Student immersion in a network of established industry and policy partnerships, in close proximity to allow meaningful and regular interaction, facilitating research and employment opportunities. E4 brings together one of the UK's largest academic clusters of environmental research in and around Edinburgh with national capability across the UK. E4 will create a lasting collaborative partnership between research, policy, industry and society organisations in order to train PhD graduates capable of addressing emerging global environmental challenges.
