Abstract:
The ARIES mission is: 'to train PhD students with excellent potential from across society, equipping them with the necessary skills to become 21st Century Scientists: leaders in the science and sustainable business of the natural environment'. We will achieve this by: 1) Developing multiple cohorts of students with advanced skills and knowledge, multidisciplinary outlooks, and potential to operate successfully across all postgraduate careers; 2) Assembling a diverse and integrated training partnership that enables students to address priority topics in environmental sciences through cutting-edge, world-leading research; 3) Training all our students to understand modern methods of data management, interrogation, analysis and presentation, from bioinformatics to artificial intelligence; 4) Ensuring our graduates engage with interfaces between science and societal needs by growing their ability to achieve non-academic impact and effective public engagement. ARIES is built on a proven record of delivering first-class PhD training: our predecessor EnvEast received the highest possible level of approval from NERC. ARIES combines environmental sciences excellence across the Universities of East Anglia (lead), Plymouth, Essex, Royal Holloway, and Kent, with Hosting Partners from 9 major research institutes. Our Partners collectively hold 15% of NERC's current funding. We have also secured a collaborative partnership of 39 end user organisations, ranging from businesses with environmental relevance (e.g. Balfour Beatty, Anglian Water) to major applied research providers and non-commercial end users (e.g. PML Applications, UK Met Office), and the whole 'family' of Defra agencies. ARIES embeds these end users in the structure, formulation and delivery of PhD training, ensuring broad relevance to the skills we develop, and the science we do. ARIES has many exciting new innovations, including: - Training designed and delivered across an extensive and truly multidisciplinary DTP integrating 59 separate university, research institute and end user partners - A range of novel advanced training courses, filling highlighted gaps in provision, and available to students from other NERC DTPs - Every student to engage in Training Needs Analysis enabled by reflective reporting, an independent Advisor, and feedback from the DTP Training Panel - 5 weeks of whole-cohort residential training for all students, building networks and teamwork skills, and including exciting 'Grand Challenges' training on issues like oil spills and microplastics - All PhD projects to have a Pathways to Impact statement - At least 75% of our studentships to be collaborative (35% CASE) with non-academic partners, ensuring training for a variety of careers and research with practical relevance - Mandatory internships so that students have non-academic experience - Continuation of our successful student-led E3I Club (Environmental Enterprise, Engagement and Innovation) - envEXPO to grow, already the largest UK environmental innovation conference for early-career researchers, now incorporating 4 other NERC DTPs ARIES covers the entire NERC remit, with a large critical mass of world-class research and training capability structured into 5 Themes addressing national and international environmental sciences priorities: 1. Ecology & Biodiversity; 2. Marine, Atmospheric & Climate Science; 3. Geosciences, Resources & Environmental Risk; 4. Environmental Genomics & Microbiology; 5. Agri-Environments & Water. On the basis of our breadth, capacity and capability, we request 32 studentships per year. ARIES' impact and legacy will be the creation of a network of highly skilled, creative and versatile scientists, who will contribute to socio-economic growth within the context of a sustainable environment, by driving innovations, making discoveries, influencing policies, training future generations, and enabling collaborations between academics and end users.
