- Abstract:
- The London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership 2 will provide a unique and exciting student experience. Our core aims are to attain new standards of excellence in environmental science research training and to deliver a transformative interdisciplinary experience for PhD students in the heart of London. Our DTP brings together eight of the world's leading environmental science research centres and over 185 Collaborative Partners from industry, business, NGOs, charities, research organisations and Government. We have already successfully developed a student focused integrated training programme that crosses boundaries between established disciplines and fields. The Partners propose a further development of this programme with heightened focus on individually-focused student training, cohort development, diversity and equal opportunities, career support, internships and CASE awards with end-user and stakeholder engagement at all levels of programme delivery. Our track record over the last 5 years includes grants of over #64M from NERC, 145 NERC PhD studentships trained with a further 74 NERC students supported and supervised. We will be building on a very successful DTP whose students' impact and output includes: 148 scientific papers and 3 popular books, presenting at 139 conferences and winning 14 conference prizes, 21 internships with end-users, and raising over #250k additional research support for their projects. DTP2 training will provide disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, transferable and employability skills needed to support the UK Government's Industrial Strategy. Our ultimate aim is to produce skilled, innovative and highly employable environmental scientists who enhance the prosperity of the UK's knowledge-based and data-driven economy. The Universities will fund an additional 11 PhD studentships per year, which is a contribution of #5.5M to the programme. The total amount the Partners have pledged altogether is over #23M. Students will have a huge range of PhD project choice with over 470 potential lead supervisors at the Host Partners working within the environmental sciences. The Partners will further enhance the student training experience and career opportunities by integrating the huge range of collaborative links with external organisations from; industry, business, international NGOs and policy makers. New enhanced employability and entrepreneurship training will be provided along with a wide range of internships with end-users. The Partnership has developed a balanced broad but deep training programme that is focused around eight research pathways: 1. Biodiversity, Ecology and Conservation, 2. Earth, Atmosphere and Ocean Processes, 3. Environmental Hazards and Pollution, 4. Environmental Physics and Mathematical Modelling, 5. Evolution and Adaptation, 6. Past Life and Environments, 7. Solid Earth Dynamics, 8. Pan-disciplinary Studies. We take student diversity very seriously and have open and transparent processes to ensure we select the very best students regardless of background (ethnicity, gender or age). We consistently have students with a very diverse background. For example our age profile of appointed students stretches from 22 to 56 years old at the PhD's start and previous employers include; Armed Forces, Banking, Business, Charities, Construction, Consultancies, Farming, Government, Health and Veterinary services and the Police. Our current students originate from 17 countries in 5 continents. In order to ensure that the DTP leaves a lasting legacy, student impact will be recorded through LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Twitter, Facebook, alumni email and exit questionnaires. Our web site will showcase success stories and academic and stake-holder impact over the lifetime of the DTP2 programme.
