Abstract:
The INSPIRE Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) will equip environmental scientists to excel in their chosen field, to thrive in interdisciplinary research teams, to apply cutting edge technology to environmental research, and to act as ambassadors of global environmental issues to industry and society. We will train students in research, professional and transferable skills within world-leading research teams to enable them to develop as future leaders. All students will be registered in a single university school. This focus will provide a central spine of essential training for all students (that incorporates peerto-peer learning throughout), but with the flexibility for student-centred needs-analysis driven training. The INSPIRE consortium is led by the research-intensive University of Southampton (UoS), where interdisciplinary research has flourished, encouraged by cross-University research initiatives including the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI), Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS), and strategic research groups in Autonomous Systems and Clean Carbon. Students will be hosted within the University and at four internationally leading research centres: the co-located National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the Natural History Museum (NHM) and the Marine Biological Association (MBA). Our partnership covers the full spectrum of the NERC science remit, but with particular strength in ocean science and technology. Our component organisations have a long history of working together in large interdisciplinary research projects, and since 2014 have collaborated with five other partner organisations in the current SPITFIRE DTP. Three of these partners collaborate also in the current UoS-led NEXUSS Centre for Doctoral Training. INSPIRE builds on SPITFIRE and NEXUSS but involves a deeper collaboration than was possible with a larger group of partners in SPITFIRE. In addition to these core partners, six further organisations will contribute to the student experience by providing co-supervision, access to facilities and training, and over twenty public and private sector organisations that are end-users of research will mentor students and contribute resources to projects via CASE studentships. Training will be delivered in focused annual blocks and incorporate training in transferable skills delivered by INSPIRE staff and specialist external providers; a choice of specialist training tailored to the individual student and project; events run in partnership with other DTPs; and interaction with industry partners and government departments. Students will be offered placement opportunities at international research organisations and in business and government. The DTP's strategic direction will be set by an inclusive Executive Committee containing partner, student and end-user representation, and will be overseen by a Stakeholder Advisory Board drawn from commercial and public sector organisations. INSPIRE builds on a 20-year collaboration between UoS and NOC in running the Graduate School of the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (GSNOCS), in which all students will be registered. GSNOCS has a centralised system for recruiting students and monitoring their progress that ensures degree completion in the allowed time-frame (96% completion within four years for the last five cohorts of full-time NERC-funded students) and production of high-quality science. The central aim of INSPIRE is to provide the focus for excellence in marine doctoral training in the UK within the broad context of the links and relevance of marine science to all NERC science disciplines, and the roles and responsibilities of environmental scientists to society and industry.
