- Abstract:
- Contemporary sea level rise, and the associated flood and coastal change that accompanies it, is recognized as posing the greatest climate change risk to the UK. The high cost of installing and maintaining flood defences along the 17,800 kilometre length of the UK's coastline makes it essential that decisions are informed by the latest knowledge of what the present and future sea level rise is likely to be. Satellite observations have a critical role to play in this task as they provide the only possible method for continuous monitoring, however, this information is not routinely used by the UK government or local authorities to inform coastal planning strategies. Therefore, the aim of this NERC Knowledge Exchange fellowship is to promote the uptake of mature Earth observation data in the development of tools that help address the challenge of sea level rise in the UK.
