Abstract:
The training will be provided through the Manchester-Liverpool Doctoral Training Programme. Students will receive a mixture of subject-specific, transferable and cohort-wide training alongside the day-to-day training in research provided through their supervisors and research group. At the outset of the PhD, each student will complete a skills audit to identify the areas where they need to develop in order to complete the PhD. This then leads to a Training Plan, agreed with their supervisors and the DTP, which contains eight units each of subject-specific and transferable skills. The subject-specific training is provided either through courses at the two Universities or national (or international) summer schools or workshops. Transferable skills training is provided by the Universities centrally or through cohort-wide events organised by the DTP. The formal training elements will be completed in the first two years of the PhD. Attendance at conferences, and presenting research results therein, is an important aspect of the research training, supported through the students' RTSG. As these are CASE studentships, the training also involves working with the CASE partner to develop the research and apply it to the CASE partner's needs.
