Abstract:
The SCENARIO DTP focuses on advancing the quantitative science of the environment, in understanding the interaction between people and environmental change, and in the exploitation of environmental science and engineering by industry and policy makers. Its overarching theme is "environmental risk and sustainability". Therefore, the DTP is very well aligned with the new Industrial Strategy, with many of our students developing and using advanced mathematical techniques, supercomputing facilities and world-leading models for environmental prediction, including high impact weather, climate and changing risk for societies worldwide. The UK is an acknowledged world-leader in global atmosphere and Earth system modelling and is home to the two leading global weather forecasting centres (ECMWF and Met Office - partners on projects listed). This links with the strategy to support the UK's world-leading sectors and the rapidly growing sector of environmental risk management and disaster risk mitigation. Some students are on the interface with satellite engineering and space weather, while others study life science and sustainability.
