- Abstract:
- Our PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are entering a world that needs a strong evidence-base to support the case for action to protect our environment and tackle climate change. This evidence is needed to help policy-makers, business people and others make the best possible decisions in a world that is complex and contains many uncertainties. We would like to build on our existing training across the University of Sheffield's Grantham Scholars, and the Grantha Institute's NERC DTP at Imperial College London, and offer a programme for slightly more experienced researchers, that builds on their deeper scientific experience, and encourages engagement beyond the research community. To deliver this we are teaming up with Defra, WWF UK, Anglian Water and Natural England as core partners, who have helped us identify key focus topics for the sessions; these include plant health, effective species conservation, climate change impacts on water companies and dispersal across landscapes. On the technical side, our training will provide synthesis skills used in both traditional research approaches and by user groups, indicating how these different styles of analysis, and use of outputs can help researchers target and present their findings to different groups. Our training programme is comprised of three modules: Module 1: Translating Research into Practice. Addresses the relationship between scientific research and decision-making in policy and business. It includes a day of interactive training followed by a facilitated networking workshop with our core partners and other stakeholders. Module 2: Parliamentary Impact & Engagement, Evidence Synthesis. Commences with a one-day workshop giving researchers insights into how parliament works, and how to submit and present evidence to parliamentary select committees. This is followed by a three-day Environmental Science Systematic Review Short course, which is reinforced though an e-Action learning course the students can take in their own time. Module 3: Evidence Synthesis in Practice. A work-shadowing day in an end-user organisation including preparation of a brief in advance, after which they have to produce a short evidence synthesis output. The course is wrapped up with an interactive workshop run with the core partners. This three module training will secure long-term learning by spreading the course elements over different sessions and several months to allow reflection and reinforcement; opportunities to network and build relationships with external stakeholders to embed insight; the development of written support material and e-learning, for ongoing reference.
