- Abstract:
- Building on a successful two year NERC Policy Placement Fellowship and a NERC funded interdisciplinary PhD training course developed by the Centre for Environmental Policy, the Evidence Synthesis Training for Environmental Policy (ESTEP) Programme will develop capacity in early stage researchers to systematically synthesise evidence to inform decision making. The program has been developed and will be delivered with significant input from policy makers at the UK Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to ensure that the training is comprehensive, addresses identifiable skill gaps, and delivers high impact outputs for environmental policy-making. The pilot focuses on synthesising evidence on approaches to Integrated Environmental Management (IEM), an important topic that has been identified with colleagues at Defra as having the potential to inform future environmental policy and practice. There is a plurality of tools available to undertake IEM, but it is often unclear which tool is best suited for which problem. This E-STEP programme will consist of two one day workshops that will include presentations, discussions, group and individual exercises. These will introduce the participants to theory and methods used to systematically synthesise evidence around IEM, as well as giving them an opportunity to understand the IEM tools that they could use in their research. Participants will be drawn from interdisciplinary backgrounds and work with peers and policy makers to undertake an authentic learning experience. This will improve their capabilities of co-designing evidence syntheses and give them the confidence to engage with policy makers in the future. The substantive outputs of the programme will be: a verbal report by participants to Defra on the synthesis of IEM evidence, a systematic map of that evidence; and individual plans of how they participants could apply the skills they have gained to undertake evidence syntheses and engage with policy in their future research.
