Abstract:
The availability of digital representations of topography from remote sensing instruments plays a key role in a number of different scientific fields, such as hydrology, geomorphology, and glaciology. Furthermore, the analysis of digital topography is important in the work of many non-academic institutions, aiding in planning and decision making in areas such as flood risk, pollution mitigation, land use management, and sustainable resource development. The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) is dedicated to protecting the natural environment and encouraging sustainable growth within Scotland. In this project I aim to integrate new software for analysing digital topography, which is must faster and easier to run than traditional software, with SEPA's Environmental Data program. I plan to use this new software, along with flood risk maps developed by SEPA, to predict areas of flooding in Scotland with future climate change. This project will result in an improved estimate of future flood risk which can be used for planning and decision-making purposes by SEPA and other governmental organisations.
