Abstract:
This training initiative will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, assess, manage and communicate environmental risk and uncertainty. Our training is unique in that it provides students the tools and techniques necessary to tackle increasingly complex environmental risks and the skills to contextualise their research across multiple scientific domains. Based on past experience, we acknowledge that few students are afforded this type of training; therefore we consider our training course as filling a valuable niche within the academic community. The impact of this training can be measured in the tools and techniques that students will be exposed to. Students will receiving training in: how and when to use quantitative and qualitative techniques for analysing risk and uncertainty; how to communicate risk and uncertainty; and what is the role of risk-based evidence in decision making (e.g. policy). In addition, students will gain valuable experience applying their knowledge in a collegiate, team-focussed environment and, given the multi-disciplinary nature of course, will begin to develop their peer network across various academic domains.
