- Abstract:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are an increasingly important skill and tool for the spatial analysis and modelling of environmental data-sets. In order that GIS can be optimally employed within environmental research applications practitioners require a good theoretical understanding and practical skill set that goes beyond that attained in introductory courses. Our 5-day Advanced Environmental Data Analysis using Geographical Information Systems training course will provide the next generation of NERC PhD students with the advanced theory and practical skills required to use GIS as an effective tool in environmental research applications. The course comprises of 9 units of study including; spatial databases for environmental data management, spatial analysis of the natural environment, spatial interpolation & geostatistics, analysis of spatially continuous environmental variables, spatial statistics for environmental analysis, network analysis of the terrestrial environment, environmental modelling in GIS and GIS scripting for environmental applications. The course structure and content is designed to allow students to appreciate the complete processing flowline involved in employing advanced GIS concepts in environmental research. The course employs a mix of lectures and related practical sessions so that students gain an excellent appreciation of how the theory of environmental GIS transfers to the practical computer skills required in environmental spatial data analysis and modelling applications. In each unit case studies are presented and developed to provide students with a good knowledge of the role that GIS can play in environmental research and investigation. Learning is supported by an extensive course guidebook, exemplar solutions to exercises and template program scripts.
