Abstract:
Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is becoming a standard tool in geoscience research for capture of high-resolution 3D data for landform characterization, monitoring deformation and for constraining model boundary conditions. In parallel, terrestrial laser scanning technology is rapidly developing, with increasing rates of data capture, resolution and precision. This growing capability is however compromised by a lack of standardised data protocols, hardware specific data manipulation and handling routines, the challenges of handling large 3D datasets on standard desktop computers, and the integration of 3D data into standard platforms such as GIS and Matlab. This residential 4-day long training course takes participants potentially new to TLS and provides fundamental training in theory, field data collection and data processing, with a focus upon gaining direct experience from well-established research and industry applications of TLS in the geosciences. Uniquely the course will focus upon 3 specific areas that reflect ongoing research expertise at Durham: 1) Use of 3D data in the derivation of change through time; 2) Geometry of geobodies & discontinuities; 3) Extraction of data metrics. The final day of the course will be a half day series of demonstrations by specialist TLS companies, demonstrating latest technology, software and providing an opportunity to discuss the future of this field of research. Throughout the course the participants will be immersed in a full TLS workflow, combining field data collection, analysis and archiving. This will be enabled by access to a range of excellent field sites, TLS equipment and excellent computer lab facilities. The course will focus on imparting transferrable cross-disciplinary skills into the participants' own field of research. Given the variety of TLS hardware and software currently employed, the course will focus upon data integration with standard platforms (e.g. GIS and Matlab), with a focus on open-source software platforms. By the end of the course participants will have obtained the key practical field and computer laboratory experience including: health and safety considerations; survey design, field data collection; analysis, and integration. By the end of the course students will have attained a deeper appreciation of modeling of 3D data, and gained awareness of some relevant areas of advanced 3D data handling. We aim to provide training to enable methods to be intelligently applied to participants' own research questions, through open access software.
