Abstract:
The NCAS Summer School in Atmospheric Measurement is a two-week fieldwork course run with involvement of NCAS, BAS and university scientists who are experts in observational atmospheric science. The goal of the course is to teach students how to make observations of the atmosphere, including the deployment of sensors and instruments, collecting and monitoring data and applying the results to real atmospheric problems. The course offers an opportunity for NERC funded PhD students and early career researchers to gain a broad theoretical understanding of atmospheric science and its application to field measurements and develop experience of taking measurements and interpreting data. The Summer School will be held on September 7-19 2014 on the Isle of Arran. The first week of the course will be held at the Kildonan Hotel on the south coast of the island and includes lecture presentations from expert atmospheric scientists. The remaining seven days are held at the Arran Outdoor Education Centre in Lamlash to the east of the island. Here students carry out various field measurement activities. The school is organised and run by the NCAS Education & Staff Development Manager, Dr. Louise Whitehouse with help from NCAS IT and admin staff. The first week of atmospheric science lectures is organised by Professor Alan Blyth, NCAS Director of Weather, and the second week by Professor Geraint Vaughan, NCAS Director of Observations. The first week of the summer school is a series of lectures, given by experts in atmospheric science in NCAS, BAS and the UK universities. In the second week students will learn about making measurements of atmospheric processes in the field. The activities are designed and led by experts in making measurements in atmospheric science.
