Abstract:
Imperial College London, six core research partners (British Geological Society, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Met Office, Natural History Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and Zoological Society of London) and 27 other private and public sector partners propose to create a vibrant new Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), "Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet" (SSCP). The partnership is requesting 15 studentships per year from NERC. Imperial will add a minimum of 10 further studentships a year, which will be open to international students, thus creating the opportunity to establish a truly global cohort. This partnership of established networks of public and private sector organisations will provide a new research and training experience for students spanning NERC's science remit and creating opportunities to innovate and engage with business and policy. The DTP is focused on both creating knowledge and translating it into real-world solutions to the environmental grand challenges we face (climate, managing ecosystem services and other resources, environmental hazards and sustainable economic growth). Such training will equip students with the skills needed to make a significant and long-term contribution to the UK's environmental and economic wellbeing, radically enhancing their employability. Using the science to develop solutions is a collaborative process that will require the close engagement with business and policy decision-makers that our partnerships will enable. Our partnership will deliver: - breadth and depth of internationally excellent research; - international profiles that will attract the brightest and best students; - outstanding PhD training capacity, combining science, solutions and policy across the NERC remit, and with close links to business and innovation; - a strong track-record of providing cross-disciplinary PhD research and training in environmental science across natural science, engineering, medicine and policy; - key strengths in topics identified by NERC as "critical skills gaps"; - continued investment and expansion of its environment profile, offering resources and opportunities for research across the NERC remit. Our approach to operating the DTP will build on that successfully developed by the nine Imperial departments that have conducted NERC-relevant doctoral training, much of it in collaboration with the DTP partners. It will also draw heavily upon the good practice learned from the successful doctoral programme led by the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, which has an established cohort of 45 multidisciplinary PhD students. The DTP's training activities are mapped onto a development Journey. Partners are the backbone of this Journey, ensuring research impact and providing insight and guidance to students during their PhD. Training will be provided in four streams: 1) individual science and technology training through access to Masters modules, specialist courses developed with partners, and transferable skills provided by the Imperial Gradual School; 2) non-discipline specific critical skills training within cohort years developed with partners; 3) wider environmental challenge exploration in teams; and 4) cohort and community activities, including seminars, lectures and an annual conference. This DTP is one of the core elements of Imperial's environment strategy, bringing together over 100 academics from across its departments and drawing in partners from the research, business and policy sectors to form an environmental community that can support and train students.
