Abstract:
This student project will examine the meteorology and climate of Pine Island Glacier and the Amundsen Sea Embayment. The first part of the project will be an assessment of the current generation of meteorological reanalyses and analyses, to establish the quality of these products for regional-scale climatological studies and the forcing of ocean and surface mass balance models. A second component of the student project will be to undertake selected high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) modelling of Pine Island Glacier and the Amundsen Sea region. A number of 'case studies' of important types of weather system for the region will be simulated and analysed. The results will help determine the quality of the reanalyses products and their ability to simulate these types of weather systems. These weather systems will impact the surface forcing of the coastal areas of Amundsen Sea and the precipitation on Pine Island Glacier, so knowing how well they are simulated will inform the quality of the forcing data sets being assessed.
