Abstract:
Over the last ten years, considerable amounts of regional three-dimensional seismic reflection data have been acquired across continental margins. Superb three-dimensional images of the structure and fill of continental margins now exist but although it is generally accepted that these margins have formed by thinning of the lithospheric plate, the way in which margins grow as a function of pace and time has received scant attention. Using our considerable experience in modelling active deformation and sedimentary basins, we intend to develop a general three-dimensional strain rate inverse model for analysing considerable volumes of two- and three-dimensional seismic reflection and other data. The success of this project relies upon active collaboration between industrial partners and a dedicated team of PhD students and PDRAs. The academic and commercial prize is substantial: 3D algorithms we develop will determine exactly the structural and thermal evolution of margins through space and time. We expect our software tools to be marketed at the end of the project.
