Abstract:
Major losses in crop productivity occur as a result of pest attack. These can be alleviated by the application of pesticides, the introduction of biocontrol agents, or by artificially inducing the plant's own resistance mechanisms. This project will explore the commercial potential of a novel method of inducing pest resistance using a natural plant product that would negate the need for use of pesticides or other biocontrol agents. Current data indicate this method provides robust and medium-term resistance in a particular plant-pest interaction in a protected crop. The feasibility of using this technology needs to be explored on a range of crops, using economically important pests, to determine the scale, life-span and applicability of the technology, and hence the commercial potential. Pests will be chosen that have both similar and different feeding strategies to those of the model for which we currently have data.
