Abstract:
The concentration of oxygen in the water of lakes, especially in deeper water near the sediment, is one of the most important characteristics of a lake. It influences the type of chemical reactions that can occur and what animals live in the sediment, if any. The oxygen concentration may be used with other properties to measure the overall quality of lakes, something that is needed for the Water Framework Directive. The oxygen concentration can not be measured every two weeks or so in the many thousands of lakes in the UK and so a model for this property needs to be developed. For the model to be accurate, it will have to rely on good understanding and on a few basic measurements in each lake. The aim of this investigation is to develop a model for the variation of oxygen concentration with water depth during Spring-Summer in small lakes. For the model to be successful a single laboratory measurement of the rate of oxygen consumption in the sediment should adequately represent the behaviour of the whole sediment and the rate of oxygen consumption in water should be unimportant. To test these assumptions, the variation of oxygen concentration with water depth will be measured up to twenty-four times in five lakes during the Spring-Summer period and the rate of oxygen consumption will be measured in ten sediment cores on one occasion in each lake. If the project is successful, the model will allow the variation of oxygen concentration with depth to be predicted during the Spring-Summer period in any lake using the maximum water depth and one measurement of the sediment oxygen consumption rate.
