- Abstract:
- Volatile iodinated organic compounds (VIOCs) play an important role in the chemistry of the marine atmosphere. Yet, there is still little knowledge of how these compounds are produced in seawater. We propose to investigate a VIOC production pathway that has received scant attention so far: the reaction of atmospheric ozone with iodide at the sea surface. Ozone is known to react with iodide to produce the very reactive intermediate species 12 and HOI. These two species, on the other hand, have been shown to react with dissolved organic matter leading to production of organo-iodine compounds; indeed this reaction has been well investigated in the field of disinfection of natural waters, as often VIOC5 have been identified as by-products of freshwater ozonation or chlorination. We therefore propose to investigate under what conditions the reaction of ozone with seawater iodide and the subsequent reaction of 12/HOI with marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) lead to the formation of VIOCs. Because of the ubiquity of tropospheric ozone and seawater iodide, this reaction pathway has the potential to be significant on a global scale. In addition, we will investigate the role of iodide and organic matter close to the sea surface in controlling the rate at which ozone is deposited on the oceans, which, in view of their huge extent, is important in budgeting and modelling of ozone in the global atmosphere.
