- Abstract:
- To explain the evolution of cooperative vertebrate societies and the division of labour within them, we need to understand the causes of variation in breeding success in females and males. In species where a single female monopolises breeding in each group and her young are reared by other group members, variation in breeding success among females is likely to be unusually large and reproductive competition among females may be more intense than among males, leading to the evolution of females that are larger and more aggressive than males. Using free-ranging but habituated groups of a cooperative mongoose (Suricata suricatta), this study will (I) compare variation in reproductive success and its components in samples of females and males; (2) investigate and compare the effects of variation in body size, hormone levels and early development on the chance that females and males will acquire alpha status; (3) determine whether the development and behaviour of the two sexes is adapted to differences in the selection pressures operating on adults.
