Abstract:
The ability to make measurements of ultra-trace chemical 'transient tracers' in oceanography has been of great utility in the development of our understanding of ocean circulation. Up to now it has not been possible to collect samples for such measurements except from research vessels, making it impossible to obtain detailed time series. This project will bring to completion the necessary technical developments to collect such time series data from autonomous moored deep ocean samplers, such as can be used to monitor over the long term the changes occurring in the makeup of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC). The project will demonstrate the utility of the technique by examining seasonal signals in the composition of overflow waters leaving the Nordic Seas, this being an objective compatible with the comparatively short time scale of the funding available. It is anticipated that, once the instrumentation is fully developed, it will be deployed on a larger spatial and longer time scales as part of an observing system for the Atlantic MOC.
