- Abstract:
- Satellite images are of great value in measuring and understanding the environments of Earth and how they are changing. Parameters that describe, for example, the vegetation cover of the land surface, surface temperature, and aerosols in the atmosphere, can be estimated from satellite imagery at carefully chosen wavelengths. Many such parameters can only be obtained from parts of the imagery where there is no cloud cover. Although screening obvious clouds is relatively easy, some cloud types are hard to detect. A wide variety of techniques for screening imagery have been developed with great effort and good success. But there is a need for a more generally applicable and effective approach, which is what this project will develop and demonstrate. The project will be pursued with (and supported by) the Met Office, applying the new cloud screening to imagery used for operational weather forecasting. The project will also be in collaboration with NERC's Climate and Land Surface Systems Interaction Centre, applying the new cloud screening to help obtain more accurate estimates of land and atmospheric parameters.
