- Abstract:
- Generating user-interest and involvement requires a proactive approach during the early stages of a research programme to facilitate knowledge transfer at a later date and maximise benefit to both the science base and wider community. UK SOLAS recognises the importance of establishing a user-network whilst the science programme is still being defined, and also appreciates that significant effort is needed to ensure that 'general interest' becomes worthwhile user-engagement. This proposal includes a request for staff support for a Knowledge Transfer Facilitator for a half-year position, in order to ensure that KT IS built-in for the UK SOLAS directed programme; develop a KT network for research user engagement; and explore specific ideas for research user involvement, via scoping studies. Two specific ideas for user engagement are identified: i) the establishment of an island-based atmospheric monitoring station; and ii) the potential programmatic use of a new survey autonomous semi-submersible (SASS). The active participation of research users in the first year of UK SOLAS will greatly enhance the programme's cost-effectiveness and overall value.
