- Abstract:
- In the pursuit of sustainable development and protection of marine ecosystems. it is recognised that greater communication and co-operation between research establishments, industry, conservation bodies, regulatory agencies and policy-makers is essential in order to develop and deliver the type of integrated policies and stewardship now being advocated in the UK, Europe and World-wide. It is important to demonstrate some of the contributions and benefits that NERC-related research, conducted in institutes and universities, can offer those charged with a responsibility for environmental protection. Funding, totalling #114,293, is requested on three counts; firstly, to strengthen and extend recently-forged links with EN, EA, Universities and Industry, and develop an effective Marine Science Forum in the South West, based at the MBA in Plymouth. Secondly, to collate centrally all relevant information on designated southwest Marine Sites (SACs & SPAs) and establish a GIS-based resource system to visualise and define the range and intensity of impacts from anthropogenic activities, and to highlight the key information gaps. We anticipate that this system will prove to be an essential tool for future environmental management. Thirdly, utilising the collective knowledge and expertise of the Forum, we propose to implement collaborative research in the form of a pilot study, focussing on one of the southwest sites, the Fal & Helford cSAC. The aim is to demonstrate the potential benefits of an holistic approach, using improved congruent methodology (novel analytical chemistry and ecotoxicological assessments) to establish cause and effect relationships, and thus generate the type of information required for more adaptive management. By sharing knowledge and developing closer working relationships between researchers, regulators and industry, the current project aims to establish some of the principles for an ecosystem-based approach to management in the marine environment, ensuring they are underpinned by the most appropriate research. The pilot project will demonstrate how these principles can be translated into practice, and can act as a blueprint for wider application. Potential benefits are wide-ranging and include not only environmental (water quality, habitats, biodiversity), but also economic and social (shellfisheries, aquaculture. leisure industry).
