- Abstract:
- This knowledge transfer initiative aims to improve the exploitation and use of remotely sensed data (from aircraft and satellites) by the Forestry Commission and the forestry industry in general, by employing a dedicated science/technology Translator. By translating the results of NERC and other funded research projects to the forestry community and exchanging ideas, expertise and technical insight, we will support the effective management and monitoring of forests within the UK. The science translator will be at a lecturer level, but with reduced teaching and administrative commitments, and their role will be to: * act as an intermediary for the exploitation of remote sensing technologies for public and private sector forestry; * act as a focal point enabling researchers and users alike to have a single point of contact. * provide an authoritative knowledge transfer service to and from the forestry industry, and including activities to assist operationalisation of remote sensing science and technologies within forestry. * create an on-line best-practice guide for remote sensing users within the forestry industry. The Forestry Commission (FC) will fund 50% of the salary costs of the post. The Translator will be hosted by The University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences, but will spend 35% at FC and forest industry locations.
