Abstract:
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like dioxins and PCBs are of considerable concern, due largely to their adverse impacts on human health, and ability to contaminate all parts of the globe. In recognition of this an international initiative to take action on POPs was agreed, that takes a significant step forward in May 2004, when the Stockholm Convention on POPs comes into force. Based at the University of Birmingham, this project will establish and maintain a network of UK groups with interests and expertise in POPs from academia, industry, policy-making and commercial organisations. Via research conferences and regular meetings, the network will bring together researchers from different disciplines and facilitate the interdisciplinary approaches required to ameliorate the environmental impacts of POPs. These events will enable the transfer of new scientific knowledge between academics and the user community. Under the Stockholm Convention, the U.K. is required to promote and facilitate the training of workers, scientists, educators, technical and managerial personnel. The network will help meet this requirement (and the more general training provision goal of the NERC mission) by running training workshops for young scientists on key themes related to POPs. The total cost of the project to the NERC is #56,851. Substantial additional direct and 'in-kind' funding will be provided by members of the user community.
