- Abstract:
- The DIEPS project is a partnership between science and industry that will use industrially operated Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to make quantitative observations and conduct experiments investigating the little-known biological community patterns and processes in the deep-sea. The conduct of strategic and fundamental scientific research will be in direct collaboration with the deep-water oil and gas industry and in liaison with environmental policy formers, implementers and regulators. It aims to conduct deep-water ecological research that is directly relevant to environmental management issues/questions and it will ensure that this knowledge is transferred, as digestible and practical advice to the collaborators. The proposed work will be carried out at primary science targets in important oil exploration areas in the West of Shetland, U.K. and in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico Collaboration with the industry will allow the comparison of communities in different areas throughout the year. The DIEPS project aims to carry out high resolution research into the community structure and function in these interesting area and through in situ experimentation investigate the driving forces for structure and change in these seabed habitats. This project will form part of the SERPENT project, which has support from world-leading industrial partners with a diverse range of global facilities. The DIEPS project will provide UK Science with a portal for knowledge transfer between and access to these resources. This project costs under #140k and makes a huge saving on the research vessel time usually incurred in deep-sea research. It will provide important support for the increased use of Isis and other ROVs in NERC science programmes.
