- Abstract:
- Natural aquatic colloids have an important role in the environment including their effects on trace pollutant and pathogen fate and behaviour. However, our quantitative understanding is poor, due their complexity and a lack of experimental methodologies capable of investigating their role. In particular, their structure and environmental 'function' is poorly known, although the current increase in technology is leading to fundamental changes and improvements in our knowledge base. This network proposal seeks to bring together a core group from the UK (and outside) who are actively investigating colloid behaviour. The network is composed of members form academia, government agencies and the private sector to facilitate the dissemination of current ideas between researchers and end-users, to assist the flow of ideas and people between these bodies and to help train early stage researchers. The network will hold regular technical meetings of network partners. A series of specialist conference and workshops and follow-up activities will be held in critical research areas. The output from these activities will provide a statement of the current knowledge in colloid structure and role in the environment, future needs and potential research directions, It is intended that the network will grow to become a wider resource in the form of a 'knowledge centre' as well as a group that sets the research agenda for engineering, physical science and environmental applications of fluorescence technologies in the water sciences.
