Abstract:
Supervised by Dr. Anna Ingvarsdottir, a small project will employ 3 student assistants for 8 weeks to make some critical measurements on samples collected during MARPROD Irminger Sea cruises. University of Aberdeen and FRS equipment, facilities and expertise will be available for the additional sample and image analysis. Taxonomic sample enumeration has been completed and the measurements made will complement this and many other MARPROD elements and wider studies. Student assistants will be trained in processing samples, target species identification, obtaining digital images of samples and from video images, applying digital image analysis techniques to acquire species abundance and length frequency data. For ARIES samples, video has already been taken and stored for samples containing Calanus, chaetognaths and amphipods. For the Dual Methot net samples, euphausiid size and species stage analysis is completed for MARPROD objectives. Additional digital camera images have been made and stored, of chaetognaths, amphipods and large copepods from summer and last winter cruises. These will undergo image analysis to count and measure animals. Some further analysis of Dual Methot net samples from all cruises will derive consistent size frequency and species abundance estimates for the other groups of predatory plankton, including fish, decapods/mysids, jellyfish and cephalopods.
