- Abstract:
- Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples collected during the Marine Productivity cruises in the Irminger Sea will be analysed using a Flowcam at the AZTI lab in Northern Spain in collaboration with Dr Xabier Irigoien and colleagues. This is an innovative device that allows counting, sizing and imaging of particles from 10 microns to 3 mm. The plankton size spectra obtained from the Marine Productivity samples will be compared with the data obtained for samples collected in exactly the same way as part of a NERC Studentship, during cruises 12 and 13 of the NERC Consortium Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme. This work will extend the significance of the Marine Productivity programme from a localised northern North Atlantic context to the ocean-basin scale. The expected output is a dataset including size spectra data for the planktonic community (phytoplankton and zooplankton) from the Irminger Sea in the North Atlantic to the Falklands Islands in the South Atlantic. The results will help understand how energy transfer in the plankton is affected by temperature and productivity.
