- Abstract:
- Diving of marine vertebrates is a biological phenomenon which is of great scientific interest. In recent years, as a result of advances in instruments such as satellite transmitters and time depth recorders, it has become possible to remotely monitor the behaviour of large marine vertebrates over extended periods. It is proposed to use the latest of these technologies to test a number of carefully designed hypotheses relating to the behavioural ecology of the hawksbill turtle at two sites in the Caribbean to promote the understanding how turtles of different sizes use their environment both in space and time. The project will also integrate the use of high-tech chemical analyses of turtles and dietary items to allow a further appreciation of the relative importance of different dietary items to turtles of different sizes. The total grant from NERC will be #46,843 but this will generate work of a much greater value as a result of matched funding. The work will involve collaboration between up-and-coming UK scientists and wildlife experts in each of the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands. It will also lead to great insights into the biology of this critically endangered species, allowing managers to better protect and manage their stocks and the critical habitats in which they live, thus contributing to the NERC mission of top environmental science which also contributes to a sustainable future.
