- Abstract:
- Radioactive waste disposal remains an unresolved issue in the UK. While wastes are held in temporary storage there is art increased likelihood of leakage, especially as containment passes its intended lifespan. It is therefore important to assess potential migration routes from radioactive waste storage sites, as well as the final disposal sites, and to consider how/if the immediate environment will limit migration. Complexation by organic matter is known to mobilise relatively immobile radionuclides to an extent, and radioactive wastes often contain significant quantities of organic complexants from reprocessing chemistry and cellulose and its degradation products from clothes, filters and papers that are co-disposed. The role of these co-contaminants therefore requires further investigation. Here we propose to develop a method for the separation, identification and semi-quantification of specific radionuclide-co-contaminant complexes using a state-of-the-art analytical approach based on liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry. This method will then be used in conjunction with aerobic and anaerobic microcosm experiments to investigate the role of these co-contaminants in mobilising three contrasting radionuclides. The analytical technique will allow identification of these complexes in water samples and will have further applications for field and laboratory work.
