Abstract:
Our coastal regions are under increasing pressure due to high levels of human activity and climate change. In the UK this coastal defence costs approximately #325 million per year. It is increasingly accepted that natural beaches are an optimal way in which we can defend our coastlines. Yet our understanding of how beaches provide this protection is poorly understood. Coastal scientists have traditionally used detailed field measurements of phenomena to help understand beach behaviour, but this tends to be expensive and does not always capture the systemic nature of the coastal region at the time scales of interest for coastal management. Video imagery of the coastal area has helped to address these deficits even though quantification of this data remains difficult. This study aims to further advance remote sensing of the coastal region by utilising multispectral imaging techniques which offers the advantage of enhanced clarity of the images as well as the capability of being able to directly quantify what we 'see' in the images. This technique will be tested at 3 beaches to investigate two phenomena of direct interest to coastal management; the extraction of wave height information and the investigation of shoreline variability which can be used to provide maps of the beach area. This project will be of interest to both the scientific research community and those charged with the stewardship of our coastlines.
