Abstract:
Aquatic habitats receive considerable amounts of waste from human activities and therefore organisms and the habitats themselves can be under threat. There is therefore a need to evaluate and manage the health of aquatic environments. We have developed a bacterial indicator, using natural bacteria, for the health of marine habitats and their water quality (ECOBOX). A patent application has been filed. This project proposes to develop a freshwater version of ECOBOX and has the support from the Environment Agency for the development of a cost-effective management tool for UK waterways. The development of a freshwater version will extend the patent claims of ECOBOX and its commercial potential.
