- Abstract:
- A wide range of highly water soluble species are formed in the atmosphere resulting from gas phase oxidation processes often involving organic compounds. Of all the water soluble classes it is peroxides which are perhaps the least well characterised in the atmosphere and provide the greatest analytical challenge. There is a current lack of specific analytical methodology to provide a positive identification of peroxide chemical structures, and a high degree of uncertainty in the quantification of these compounds. In this project we will investigate liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry as a method for positive identification and measurement of peroxides in air. The techniques developed in tackling this problem will be widely transferable and in parallel methodologies will be developed for the positive identification of other electronegative molecules such as organic acids, which are key species in gas to particle transfer of organic material. The development of analytical methods for resolving compounds such as speciated peroxides, organic acids and other small polar molecules will add considerably to the UK atmospheric chemistry measurement capability.
