- Abstract:
- The physical properties of natural and synthetic materials which form the bulk of the earth or are used in materials science depend on their structures at an atomic level. Their elastic properties determine the velocities of seismic waves, from which the layered structure of the earth is determined in detail, as well as the behaviour of piezoelectric, ferroelastic or other types of devices. There have recently been substantial advances in the methods available for measuring the elastic properties of small samples and in the theory available for understanding the large anomalies which accompany phase transitions. In this project it is proposed to build a new facility for making such measurements. This type of facility is not currently available in the UK. The first set of experiments using the new equipment is designed to investigate large changes in the elastic behaviour of selected minerals when they undergo changes in structure as a consequence of being subjected to changes in temperature. The new equipment will complement existing facilities in Cambridge for the advanced characterisation of the structures and properties of minerals.
