Abstract:
Aerosols play an important role in controlling the dynamics and radiative balance of the upper troposphere. Their effects are both direct, through the radiative forcing due to their absorption and scattering of solar radiation, and indirect, through their influence on cloud and precipitation processes. The role of aerosols is now recognised as being a vital component in the successful modelling of the atmosphere, and to this end most current global climate models include the interaction of aerosols and meteorological processes. In addition some models also attempt to account for aerosol/cloud interaction, heterogeneous chemistry and wet-removal of aerosol. For such models to produce accurate results it is necessary that the global distribution and composition of upper tropospheric aerosol be well-characterized. The description and modelling of aerosol properties is much more complex than for trace gases, due to the large degree of spatial and temporal variation in aerosol properties. The UTGARD project will make use of the current generation of satellite based radiometers to produce global maps of upper tropospheric aerosol. By utilizing three different instruments the project will produce data with unprecedented spatial covering and resolution, and will provide three key parameters for the determination of the aerosols' influence: particle size, concentration and composition. The UTGARD project represents the synthesis of the state-of-the-art in both instrumentation and data analysis and will provide a product which will be an invaluable tool in the effort to understand and model the global climate system.
