Abstract:: In species where both parents provide care to offspring, conflicts of interest over the allocation of care are expected among the different family members. Familial conflicts can be divided into three social dimensions: sexual conflict between male and female parents, (2) conflict between the parents and the offspring, and (3) conflicts among the offspring. Most existing research has focused on the resolution of a single social dimension in isolation from the other dimensions, typically using birds as model organisms. Here we propose a unique project that will focus simultaneously on all three social dimensions of familial conflict using a combination of theoretical and empircal approaches. We will develop new theoretical models that addresses the genetic and the phenotypic basis for the resolution of familial conflict. We will conduct empirical tests of these models on inbred lines of the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides. This species is an ideal model organism because it breeds readily under laboratory condition where variation in confounding variables can be controlled. Furthermore, the offspring display distinctive begging behaviour to which the parents respond by providing food. Hence, offspring and parental behaviours can be observed directly. Finally, we will integrate our theoretical and empirical finding across the three social dimensions.
