Abstract:
Carbon and oxygen isotope time series will be developed from a Northern European multi-millennial tree-ring chronology. These records will provide annually resolved, quantitative climate information with which to track the nature of terrestrial palaeoclimate change and its relationship with ice-core and marine records. High levels of sequence replication enable confidence limits to be assigned to multi-proxy palaeoclimate estimates to improve detection of climate change operating over both high and low frequencies. High resolution laser ablation analysis of inter- and intra-annual signals preserved within tree-rings will be used to advance dendroclimatology from dependence upon statistical inference towards a mechanistic approach.
